Blurb: I’m pushing aside
the memory of my nightmare,
pushing aside thoughts of Alex,
pushing aside thoughts of Hana
and my old school,
push,
push,
push,
like Raven taught me to do.
The old life is dead.
But the old Lena is dead too.
I buried her.
I left her beyond a fence,
behind a wall of smoke and flame.

Thoughts on Book: Okay, I’ll be honest. I don’t really read YA. In fact the only reason why I picked this up is because it got recommended to me. I am not a YA fan. Again, nothing against it but it’s just not for me.
Okay, this book started off really slow for me. And by slow I mean, it took me until the first 100 pages to actually get interesting into the book. From that point, the story finally picked up and it didn’t seem to drag constantly. It still dragged a bit more in places but, overall, it had a nice pace. It was a thrill ride but I kept reading.
As far as characters go, I would say that both Lena and Raven give me mixed feelings. I understand where each character is coming from. I get the why they do what they do. Still, Raven came off as this, not necessarily over bearing, but definitely this “I’m-going-to-test-your-survival-by-bringing-you-to-almost-the-brink-of-death” type of mentor for Lena. She came off as this character who pushed Lena(or any other character under her tutelage) past their breaking point, and then smiling and being happy when there is resentment or the test is passed. I mean I get her. I understand her point. However, I don’t really agree with it.
Lena has a bit less of this. In the beginning, it was kind of hard to pinpoint her character. Toward the end, she comes to life and is no longer static or just going along. Again, her reason/purpose for being like that in the beginning makes sense. However, this goes on and on and on and on. But I did grow to like her.
Overall, it was good. I enjoyed. I can already see the inklings of what I think are a love triangle though. So,….yeah. There’s that.
